On September 28th, Mr. Jean-François Thony, President of the Siracusa International Institute for Criminal Justice and Human Rights, presented at the International Conference on “Combating Illicit Trade – Progress, Challenges and Collaborative Solutions” in London. The event was organised by the Financial Times in partnership with PMI Impact, a global grant initiative to combat illicit trade.
The purpose of the conference was to engage with business executives, industry leaders and senior policy makers in exploring opportunities and challenges in fighting illicit trade and its related crimes. The Institute is deeply involved in this field including through its new technical assistance and capacity-building project “Strengthening the Fight Against Illicit Trade in South Eastern Europe”, which was officially launched in September 4th, 2017.
Mr. Thony presented the expert dialogue “International Treaties to Combat Illicit Trade and Related Crimes Harmonisation and Implementation”, in conjunction with the Siracusa Institute’s colleagues Mr. Gioacchino Polimeni, Former Director, United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) and Mr. John M. Sellar OBE FRGS, Anti-Smuggling, Fraud, and Organised Crime Advisor.
The conference was also attended by Mr. Filippo Musca, Deputy Director General of the Siracusa International Institute and by Mr. Tobias Freeman, Senior Legal Officer.
