Judge Christine Van den Wingaert elected as a new member of the Siracusa Institute’s Advisory Board

The Siracusa International Institute is pleased to announce that during the Board of Directors Meeting in Siracusa on 9 December 2017, Judge Christine Van den Wingaert was elected as a new member of the Advisory Board of the Institute.

Judge Van den Wingaert currently serves as a judge of the International Criminal Court, where she is assigned to the Appeals Division. Throughout her career, she has held various esteemed positions. She was a Professor of Law at the University of Antwerp (1985 – 2005) where she taught criminal law, criminal procedure, comparative criminal law and international criminal law. She was an ad hoc judge in the Arrest Warrant Case (2000 – 2002) at the International Court of Justice as and a judge in the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia for more than five years (2003 – 2009). She has served as Vice-President of the International Association of Penal Law since 2014. (Click here for full biography).

Judge Van den Wingaert will work in this important position together with the six other members of the Advisory Board:  Judge Rosario Aitala, former Legal Adviser to the President of the Italian Senate and new Judge of the International Criminal Court, Mr. Michael Lauber, Prosecutor General of Switzerland, Judge Bernard Leroy, Honorary Deputy General Prosecutor of the Court of Appeal of Versailles and Director of the International Institute of Research against Counterfeit Medicines (IRACM), Mr. Jean-Pierre Picca, Partner, White & Case, Paris and former Senior Legal Adviser to the President of the French Republic, Ambassador Stephen J. Rapp, Former Ambassador-at-large, Office of Global Criminal Justice, Department of State, USA and Judge Franco Roberti, Former Italian National Anti-Mafia and Counterterrorism Prosecutor.
