Environmental Crime in the Mediterranean: A Conversation at the 15th UN Crime Congress

28/09/2026

At the 15th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice in Abu Dhabi, we organized an ancillary meeting on environmental crime in the Mediterranean:

“Protecting a Shared Sea: Confronting Environmental Crime in the Mediterranean and Charting the Way Ahead”

The discussion focused on the most relevant challenges linked to environmental crime, as well as the value of cross-border cooperation and regional initiatives. The exchanges highlighted successful examples of regional cooperation to protect common ecosystems against environmental crime.

This reinforces our view that there is a need for a regional approach in the Greater Mediterranean area and our commitment to our Greater Mediterranean Environmental Crime Program (GMEC).

We are sincerely grateful to the panel speakers and to everyone who joined the discussion.
