This October, the we are bringing “Transitional Justice in the AI Era: Challenges and Opportunities for Peacebuilding” to Geneva Peace Forum, together with UNESCO, International, Impartial and Indipendent Mechanism – Syria (IIIM) and the Institute for Information Law (IViR).
AI and digital technologies are increasingly shaping how evidence is collected, verified and analysed in conflict and post-conflict settings.
But what happens when these tools meet fair trial guarantees, human rights, access to justice and the need to put victims at the centre?
On 14 October in Room 6, Margarita Yordanova (Evidence Officer, IIIM), Alessia Gualtieri (Senior Legal Officer, SII), Kamel El Hilali (AI & Rule of Law Specialist, UNESCO) and Els de Busser (Associate Professor of Information Law, UvA) will open the discussion, moderated by Filippo Musca (Director General, SII).
40 participants will work through realistic scenarios in four groups, exploring:
- AI and evidence
- Human rights and fair trial guarantees
- Access to justice and inclusion
- AI governance and accountability
The discussions will contribute to a short Guidance Note on AI in Transitional Justice, capturing participants’ recommendations and key insights.
Please note that registration is mandatory for attendance at the Geneva Peace Forum, but registrations are not made for individual events or workshop. Seats at all events are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
