On September 12th 2018, Mr. Filippo Musca, Acting Director General of The Siracusa International Institute for Criminal Justice and Human Rights, chaired a workshop on “Training prosecutors and institutional independence” as part of the 23rd Annual Conference and General Meeting of the International Association of Prosecutors (IAP) in Johannesburg. This year the conference was focused on the relationship between the independence of the prosecution services and judiciary and the accountability of prosecutors.
During the session, Mr. Musca underlined the importance of training programs for prosecutors, both at the beginning of their career and during their entire career, being delivered by independent training institutions. Participants discussed the cultural, substantive and financial challenges that the development and delivery of such programs may face, providing several concrete examples and focusing on the kind of support such training institutions should receive, both at the national and supranational level.
