10/09/2018

From September 9th to 13th, Judge Jean-François Thony, President of the Siracusa International Institute for Criminal Justice and Human Rights, in his capacity as Prosecutor General of the Court of Appeal of Rennes, is attending the 23rd Annual Conference and General Meeting of the International Association of Prosecutors (IAP) in Johannesburg (South Africa).

This year the theme of the conference is “Prosecutorial Independence – The Cornerstone of Justice to Society” and it is focused on the relationship between the independence of the prosecution services and judiciary and the accountability of prosecutors. The main aim of the IAP conference is to outline a new framework for further progress on the issue of prosecutorial independence.

The opening remarks of the conference were given this morning by Mr. Gerard Jarosch, President of the IAP, Dr. Silas Ramaite, Acting National Director of Public Prosecution of South Africa, Mr. Michael Masutha, Minister of Justice of South Africa and Mr. Cyril Ramaphosa, South Africa’s President.

The Siracusa International Institute is also represented at the conference by Mr. Filippo Musca, Acting Director General, who will chair a workshop on “Training Prosecutors and Institutional Independence” on September 12th.

The IAP is one of the most important partners of the Siracusa International Institute. Since 2016 they have co-organised the Specialisation Course for Junior Prosecutors on International Criminal Justice and International Cooperation in Criminal Matters, which is designed to highlight the most important synergies between international criminal law and the domestic prosecution of international crimes.
