03/03/2026

We are saddened by the passing of Giuseppe Di Gennaro, Honorary Vice President of the Siracusa International Institute for Criminal Justice and Human Rights.

Giuseppe Di Gennaro was an Italian magistrate who worked nationally and internationally, in the fight against organized crime and drug trafficking. From 1981 to the early 1990s, he served as Executive Director of the United Nations Fund for Drug Abuse Control (UNFDAC), the United Nations body leading global efforts against drug abuse and illicit trafficking, now part of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

In 1992, he served as Acting Head of the newly established Direzione Nazionale Antimafia, contributing to the strengthening of the national response to organized crime. He was the author of the legislation on pentiti (collaborating witnesses) and of the juvenile justice code.

Over the course of his distinguished career, he also served as Consigliere di Cassazione and as Director of Office X of the General Directorate of Prevention and Penitentiary Institutions at the Ministry of Justice, among other senior institutional roles.

The Siracusa International Institute extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. His dedication to justice will remain a lasting source of inspiration for our Institute.
