Conference on Environmental Justice in the Mediterranean (2nd part)

Between 14-15 March, 2023, Director General of the Siracusa International Institute for Criminal Justice and Human Rights (SII), Filippo Musca, and research fellow, Flavio Bellio, participated in the Conference on Environmental Justice in the Mediterranean (2nd part) in Algiers, Algeria.

The conference saw the participation of over 80 participants from different Mediterranean countries and European institutions. It was led by magistrates and executives as well as experts, university professors and practitioners.

This event is part of the of the Technical Assistance Facility of the EuroMed Justice Programme, which is an instrument created within the framework of the EuroMed Justice IV project with the aim of providing the Southern Neighbourhood Partner Countries (SNPCs) with flexible and tailored capacity building in priority areas. The objectives of the event were:

– Strengthening the capacity of the criminal justice authorities of the participating countries to deal with environmental crime;

– To strengthen trans-Mediterranean judicial cooperation in criminal matters in the field of environmental crime.

During the conference, Flavio Bellio introduced the Greater Mediterranean Programme on Environmental Crime (G-MEC), a program that aims at assisting States of the Mediterranean region in increasing their ability to address the various aspects of environmental crime.
