Between May 20th and 24th, The Siracusa International Institute for Criminal Justice and Human Rights is participating in the twenty-eighth session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ), organised by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). Mr. Filippo Musca, Acting Director General of the Institute, is attending the event in Vienna.
The CCPCJ was established by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Resolution 1992/1 and it currently acts as the main policy-making body of the United Nations in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice. Its main purposes include the improvement of actions to fight transnational crime and the enhancement of criminal justice administration systems.
The twenty-eighth session of the CCPCJ is focused on several issues, including thematic discussions on the coordination of efforts by UNODC and by Member States for the ratification and implementation of some important United Nations Conventions – in particular the Convention against Transnational Organized Crime and the Convention against Corruption – and other international instruments to prevent and combat terrorism.
The 28th sessions of the CCPCJ foresees also several side events dedicated to important issues, including:
- Fight to modern slavery and human trafficking;
- Challenges and possible solutions against illicit financial flows;
- Human Rights in the Administration of Justice;
- Strengthening the Rule of Law through Education; and
- Fight to organized crime through regional cooperation instruments.
The Siracusa International Institute Institute is particularly interested in these issues because they directly impacts upon its core values and overall mission. Since 1992 the Institute has been one of the nineteen organizations making up the United Nations Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Programme Network, which supports the UNODC in strengthening international cooperation in criminal matters.
