On June 21,2022 Director General of the Siracusa International Institute for Criminal Justice and Human Rights, Filippo Musca, took part in the high-level international conference “The Palermo Convention: the future of the fight against transnational organized crime” organized in Naples, Italy, by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM).
The event benefited from the cooperation of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Vittorio Occorsio Foundation and concerned the revision of the Palermo Convention, against transnational organized crime.
Among the issues, examined at the PAM Conference in Naples, were:
- People smuggling, trafficking and exploitation, and illicit trafficking in organs, firearms, cultural artefacts, counterfeit medicines, and toxic waste.
- The link between transnational organized crime and terrorism.
- Environmental crimes.
- The exploitation of new information and communication technologies by criminal groups.
During his speech, Director Musca stated: “The lack of harmonization of environmental crime legislations in the region is an obstacle to effective international judicial cooperation in criminal matters”.
The results achieved in the different sessions will be shared with the Conference of the Parties in October 2022.
