Today, the Siracusa International Institute remembers its founder, a source of inspiration, and long-standing former President, Professor M. Cherif Bassiouni, on the third anniversary of his death. Universally considered as the “Father of International Criminal Law”, Professor Bassiouni dedicated his life to the development of international criminal justice and effective protection of human rights worldwide.

The President of the Italian Republic remembered Professor Bassiouni and his paramount role during the memorial ceremony held on the first anniversary of his death at the Institute’s headquarters in Siracusa.

Although he is no longer among us, Professor Bassiouni remains an inspirational steer for the Institute. His legacy has left an indelible mark which reinforces the mission of the Institute every day and in increasingly uncertain times.

Few weeks ago, a new online section on Professor Bassiouni’s Memoirs was published on the Institute’s website. This section contains important materials such as documents, speeches, interviews, and videos related to his life and his impact on international criminal justice and human rights. These documents, which  integrate Professor Bassiouni’s posthumous book entitled “A man of many flags: memoir of a war crimes investigator”, also include materials related to his efforts for the establishment of the International Criminal Court, as well as for the adoption of important international conventions.
