Today, during the 10th session of the Specialization Course in International Criminal Law for Young Penalists at the Siracusa International Institute, we were honored to welcome Ms. Francesca Albanese, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
Ms. Albanese delivered a compelling lecture on “International Law at Times of Genocide”, exploring the role of international legal frameworks in addressing complex humanitarian crises. Among her many insightful remarks, she urged the audience:
“Don’t have faith in international criminal law — just make it work. We have it.”
This call to action underscored the need for pragmatism, persistence, and collective effort in upholding justice and accountability.
The session sparked a dynamic and thoughtful discussion, allowing participants to engage with Ms. Albanese on pressing legal questions and the challenges of implementing international justice.
We extend our deepest gratitude to Ms. Albanese for her generosity, expertise, and commitment to fostering dialogue among the next generation of legal professionals.
