The Siracusa Institute’s 17th Specialization Course in International Criminal Law on “The International Criminal Court at Fifteen” opened today in the presence of more than 40 participants from 25 countries across the world, from Burkina Faso to Canada, and Australia to Kenya.
The course is sponsored by the International Association of Penal Law (France), the University of Palermo Department of Law (Italy), the Irish Centre for Human Rights, National University of Ireland (Ireland) and Middlesex University Department of Law (UK).
The 17th Specialization Course will focus on critically assessing the International Criminal Court’s activities, fifteen years after the entry into force of its founding Rome Statute. The working sessions are coordinated by Professor Willam Schabas, Course Director, together with twelve leading international experts, including Professor M. Cherif Bassiouni, Honorary President of the Institute, Chile-Eboe-Osuji, Judge of the International Criminal Court, Margaret DeGuzman, Associate Professor of Law at Beasley School of Law, Temple University (United States), and Christine Van den Wyngaert, Judge of the International Criminal Court. The course will also include a moot court competition on the topics dealt throughout the course, so that participants can test their knowledge, preparation and oratory skills.
The opening ceremony of the course was held this morning, when participants were welcomed by Professor M. Cherif Bassiouni, the Siracusa Institute’s Honorary President, Professor William Schabas, Course Director and Mr. Francesco Italia, Deputy Major of the City of Siracusa. The opening ceremony was also attended by Mr. Ezechia Paolo Reale, Secretary General of the Institute and Mr. Filippo Musca, Deputy Director.
