In the framework of the “Pilot regional mechanism to enhance cooperation on anti-money laundering and countering the financing of terrorism”, the Siracusa Institute and the EU AML/CFT Global Facility co-organized a Regional Conference on “Strengthening Judicial Cooperation in the MENA Region: Judges and Prosecutors at the forefront of the Fight against Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing” in Manama, Bahrain, in March 2022. The Conference brought together 83 speakers and participants, including 48 representatives from 17 countries of the MENA region, and aimed at strengthening international judicial co-operation and the efficient application of existing MLA standards and international instruments by judges and prosecutors. The overall purpose of the Conference was to equip judges and prosecutors with the specialised knowledge they require to carry out their AML/CFT related responsibilities and tasks.
A Regional Conference on “Strengthening Judicial Cooperation in the MENA Region: Integrated Approaches to the Investigation and Prosecution of Money Laundering” was organized on June 5-7, 2023, in Rabat, Morocco, in cooperation with the Ministry of Justice of Morocco and MENAFATF.
The three-day event brought together 102 speakers and participants, including 69 representatives from 17 countries of the MENA region, and focused on the effective implementation of the recommendations endorsed at the end of the previous conference organized in Bahrain in March 2022. In order to be able to adequately address the subject, this event focused on the fight against money laundering, in particular on the subject of the recovery of the proceeds of crime and international cooperation in this area.
The conference served as a forum for representatives of institutions of MENA countries to discuss their collective and individual responses to AML/CFT threats, share best practices and coordinate their approaches.
