DEPMI – The External Dimension of the Italian Migration Policy
DEPMI – The External Dimension of the Italian Migration Policy
Between 2021-2023, the Siracusa International Institute conducted a research study on the External Dimension of the Italian Migration Policy.
The objective of this research project, implemented with the support of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, was to scientifically and systematically analyze the external dimension of Italian migration policies.
Its analysis involved mapping, identifying, classifying, and examining the various cooperation agreements and instruments that Italy had adopted with countries of origin and transit of migration flows in the extended Mediterranean region.
The project specifically aimed to address the following research questions:
What types of diplomatic instruments and political and operational agreements form the external dimension of Italian migration policies?
What are their characteristics, and how can they be classified?
What role does functional cooperation and development aid play in this context?
Which types of programs and projects contribute to the external dimension of Italian migration policies?
Scientific Coordinator: Iole Fontana (University of Catania).
Research Team: Matilde Rosina (Brunel University) and Sahizer Samuk (independent researcher).

The project and its results were publicly presented for the first time during an online event held on June 13, 2023.
