The Institute mourns the loss of Professor Alfonso Maria Stile

The Siracusa International Institute mourns the loss of Professor Alfonso Maria Stile, former dean of the Institute and currently honorary vice president.

Professor Stile was a personal friend of Professor M. Cherif Bassiouni and has worked at his side since the early years of the Institute’s existence, contributing to the achievement of its most important goals as well as increasing its prestige at the national and international level. He also gave life to the many collaborations of the Institute (then ISISC) with the Italian academic world.

In his professional career, Professor Stile also served as Vice-president of the International Association of Penal Law (AIDP), President of the Italian Section (2010-2015), and then Honorary President.

As Dean of the Institute, he had the merit – at the turn of the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s – of coordinating all the most important seminars and activities organised at the national level. He acted as a central point of reference for the main representatives of the Italian academic world and contributed to the recognition of the Institute as a reality of excellence in the field of legal culture and training.

Among the countless activities brilliantly organised, we recall: “Teaching, Research and Professional Training in Criminal Justice” (December 1976); “Perspectives of the New Italian Penal Procedure” (January 1978); Legally protected interest and reform of the special part of the Italian penal code” (October 1981); “Reform of Crimes Against the Public Administration” (October 1986); “Perspectives on a new Penal Code: The General Part” (October 1992); “Organized Crime: To define the Phenomenon” (December 1996); “Examination and Evaluation of the delegated law scheme of the Pisapia Commission” (June 2007).

The ‘Professor’, as many of his students simply called him, had a particularly keen eye for the younger generations of lawyers (many of whom have then followed his footsteps, collaborating with the Institute), Professor Stile was the first promoter of the creation of courses for Ph.D. students in criminal law and procedure named after ‘Giuliano Vassalli’, the tenth edition of which was celebrated in 2020.

Professor Stile is widely regarded as a paramount expert with a huge legal culture. He devoted his entire professional life to share his knowledge through many scientific publications and series on criminal law.

We will always remember his dedication and we will miss his gentle and friendly personality.
