Vienna: The Institute joins the 10th session of the conference of the parties to the Palermo Convention

Between October 12th and 16th, 2020, The Siracusa International Institute for Criminal Justice and Human Rights is participating in the 10th session of the conference of the parties to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC or “Palermo Convention”).

Adopted twenty years ago in Palermo by the General Assembly resolution 55/25 (15 November 2000), UNTOC is nowadays the most important international instrument in the fight against transnational organized crime. The Convention, which was signed by 147 states, is supplemented by three Protocols against Trafficking in Persons, Smuggling of Migrants and Illicit Manufacturing and Trafficking in Firearms (Thereto Protocols).

The event in Vienna is focused on several issues, including the review of the implementation of the Convention and the protocols, as well as the analysis of the new forms and dimensions of transnational organized crime and the international cooperation with particular emphasis on extradition and on the establishment and strengthening of central authorities

The 10th session of the conference of the parties to the Palermo Convention envisages also several side events, including:

  • Promoting International Cooperation in controlled delivery to tackle Transnational Drug Trafficking;

  • Wildlife Crime in the Spotlight: Recent Trends and Policy Implications;

  • Strengthening International Cooperation and Mutual Legal Assistance to improve Investigations and Prosecutions of Trafficking in persons’ cases;
  • Organized Crime and the Trafficking of Falsified Medical Products;

  • Non-Punishment of Victims of Trafficking; and

  • The Impact of Covid-19 on Organized Crime.

The Siracusa International Institute is particularly interested in these issues because they directly impact upon its core values and overall mission.
