On 4 June, the Siracusa International Institute visited NATO Strategic Direction South (NSD-S or NATO Southern Hub), which is located at Allied Joint Force Command, Naples. The Southern Hub is an innovative initiative that connects Allies, Partners, Subject-Matter Experts and non-military entities to better understand and overcome strategic and security challenges, as well as look for opportunities in connection to the Middle East, North Africa, the Sahel and Sub-Saharan Africa.
Filippo Musca, Deputy Director General, and Tobias Freeman, Senior Legal Officer, met with the Director of the NATO Southern Hub, Brigadier General Roberto Agnius, as well as representatives of the Comprehensive Research and Analysis, and Civilian-Military Engagement Sections. The Institute and Hub had wide-ranging, constructive discussions about potential areas for cooperation and collaboration. In particular, collaboration on the topics of organised crime, terrorism and related illicit trade challenges for the Mediterranean Region, including the Middle East and North Africa, were highlighted during the day’s meetings.
